Names you check

For most states, the name check runs in your browser: it copies the name to your clipboard and opens the official state site. Where a live check is offered, the name you type is sent from our server to the state's open-data service or to our registry data provider, OpenSOSData, to run that one search. We keep the result in short-term memory for up to 24 hours so repeat searches load faster, and we do not store it in any database or tie it to you. The name is removed from the page address after it fills the search box.

Information we collect

Our host, Vercel, records standard server logs such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, used for security and to keep the site running.

Analytics

We measure traffic to learn which guides people use. We record events such as a name check being run in a given state or a click to an official site, but never the business name you type, and we remove it from page addresses before any analytics tool sees them. Depending on what is enabled, these tools may run:

  • Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights, which count visits and page speed without cookies.
  • Google Analytics 4, which sets cookies to tell repeat visits apart. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
  • Microsoft Clarity, which records anonymized clicks and scrolling to show how pages are used. See Microsoft's privacy statement.

You can block cookies in your browser settings; the site works without them.

Email

If you email us, we keep your message only as long as needed to answer it and fix any reported error.
